Why go
Silver Beach is the headline: a quartz-sand strand that literally glints silver at low tide, backed by casuarina pines and free to walk. It is developed at the northern end and gloriously empty the further south you go.
Weizhou Island, an hour by ferry, is the reason to stay longer: a young volcanic island where the Catholic church is built of coral, banana groves hide between basalt walls, and the sunset spot at Crocodile Hill looks out over black lava shelves. Stay overnight to have the island after the day-trippers leave.
