Why go
Shuhe was the leather-working quarter of the Lijiang valley and a waystation on the Tea-Horse Road. Its water system is the classic Naxi pattern: a spring at Nine-Dragon Pool feeds channels that run down every lane, so fresh water reaches every doorstep.
The village centre is compact — one main square, one big bridge, a few lanes of guesthouses and cafés. Development has grown here, but the scale is still human, and a short walk past the old mill brings you into open farmland with the Jade Dragon range across the valley.

Where to go
Start at Sifang Street, walk to the Qinglong Bridge, then follow the stream up to Nine-Dragon Pool. Beyond the pool the lanes thin out into fields — follow the path to the old water mill and the western edge of town for mountain views with no one else around.
Practical notes
Shuhe is the quieter alternative to sleeping inside Dayan's old town, with cheaper guesthouses and car access. Horse riding is offered along the north meadows; negotiate a clear price before mounting. The village bars are low-key compared with Lijiang's noisy nightlife.
