Year-round

A cave is weather-proof: the 19°C interior works in any season. Summer crowds are the only variable — visit early or late to dodge the groups.

Why go

Reed Flute Cave is karst at its most theatrical. The cave runs through the Guangming Mountain on a single guided loop, and its formations — layered like frozen waterfalls, clustered like a forest of stone — have been given poetic names and lit in blues, purples and golds. The lighting is old-school and deliberate, closer to an aquarium than a nature reserve, and that is precisely its charm.

Inscriptions on the walls date back to the Tang dynasty, when it was an occasional refuge and shrine. The modern version — opened in 1962, floodlit, narrated — has received dozens of heads of state, which the guides will happily tell you.

  • The 'Palace of Natural Arts' — rainbow-lit stalactites, stalagmites and columns
  • The Crystal Palace, a cavern so large it hosts legends and classical-music light shows
  • The 70-metre 'Dragon Pagoda' stalagmite and the cave's 70-plus named formations
  • Easy access and a guided one-way route — the gentlest karst cave in China

Practical tips

The cave is always ~19°C — comfortable in summer, warm in winter. Photography works best with the guided lighting sequences; wait for a moment between groups for a clear shot. It is compact, so combine it with a river cruise or a half-day of the city.

Nearby

The other Guilin caves are bigger and farther out: the Crown Cave and Silver Cave along the Lijiang route, each 45–90 minutes from the city. If you only see one, Reed Flute's quality and convenience win; if you want scale, take the Silver Cave.

Getting there

  • Taxi or bus 3/58 from Guilin city centre (~20 min)
