Why go
Come in deep winter despite the cold — that is when the city performs. Ice and Snow World takes blocks from the Songhua River and builds castles, slides and towers with them, lighting everything at 5pm. Thermal layers, heated insoles and glove-friendly phone pockets matter more than itinerary genius.
Between ice sessions, the city is a walkable museum of Russo-European nostalgia: Saint Sophia's green onion dome, the flood memorial tower, Madier ice cream on Central Avenue (eat it outside, even in January — it is the local ritual), and bread shops selling the ring-shaped lieba loaves Russians left behind.

Where to go
Day one: Saint Sophia, Central Avenue, Songhua riverside, then Ice and Snow World from 2pm. Day two: Siberian Tiger Park, the Unit 731 site museum (a sobering, well-documented memorial) or a day trip to the Snow Town villages.
What to eat
Guobaorou — crisp pork in amber sauce — was invented here for Russian diners. Red sausage (hong chang), lieba bread and kvass-style drinks complete the Slavic set.
