Why go
Kunming's altitude keeps it between 8°C and 23°C all year, and the city leans into it: jacaranda avenues bloom purple in spring, and from November to March thousands of Siberian black-headed gulls colonise Green Lake, where locals feed them from the bridges.
The Stone Forest, 90 minutes east, is a 350 km² field of limestone blades that the Yi people's legend explains as a forest turned to stone. It is busy but genuinely unworldly — go early, and take the long loop past the quieter pinnacles.

Where to go
One day for Green Lake, Yuantong Temple and the flower market; one day for the Stone Forest. Longer stays add the Western Hills' cliffside Dragon Gate above Dianchi Lake.
What to eat
Yunnan cross-the-bridge rice noodles is the ritual — a scalding broth arrives with a fan of raw ingredients to add in order. Also try steam-pot chicken, rubing goat cheese, and flower cakes (rose-petal pastries) from corner bakeries.
