Why go
The core ritual is free: cross Victoria Harbour on the green-and-white Star Ferry as the skyline does its evening light show, then ride the funicular up to Victoria Peak to look down on it all. Between the two, Hong Kong layers colonial facades, incense-filled temples, wet markets and some of the densest Michelin-star dining on earth.
Hong Kong is also a hiking city: the Dragon's Back trail and Lantau Island's sunset peaks are under an hour from downtown by transit. Macao is an hour by ferry across the estuary.

Where to go
Day one: Star Ferry, Tsim Sha Tsui and the Peak at dusk. Day two: Hong Kong Island side — Man Mo Temple, mid-levels escalators, Dai Pai Dong lunch, Happy Valley races if on. Day three: Lantau's Big Buddha and Tai O stilt village, or a Macao day trip.
What to eat
Dim sum for breakfast (har gow, siu mai, cheung fun), roast goose, wonton noodles, egg waffles, milk tea at a cha chaan teng — and the world's cheapest Michelin meal at Tim Ho Wan.
Entry & visa
Hong Kong maintains a separate immigration regime from mainland China. A Chinese mainland visa does NOT cover Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong entry does not cover the mainland — travelling both means arranging both.
Most nationalities enter Hong Kong visa-free for 7 to 180 days depending on passport (check the Hong Kong Immigration Department's visa-free list before flying).
Practical border tips: the High Speed Rail from West Kowloon runs co-located immigration — you clear both Hong Kong and mainland procedures inside the station. Land ports (Lo Wu, Futian, Lok Ma Chau) get very busy on weekends and holidays; travel before 9am.
If you plan to visit the mainland from Hong Kong and return, make sure your Chinese visa is double-entry (or use the 240-hour visa-free transit if your itinerary qualifies). Carry your passport — HKD cash is still useful at small stalls, though Octopus card payment is near-universal.
