Why go
Qinghai Lake is big in the way only plateau lakes are: you drive for an hour and the water is still at your side, the far shore a haze of blue-grey mountains. The rapeseed fields of July stack yellow against the lake's blue and the sky's higher blue, and the whole scene reads like a colour test card.
The loop rewards slow travel. Most visitors run the east shore, where the action concentrates, then decide whether to push the full 360 kilometres — a two-day cycle, or a long day by car.
- The 360 km lake loop by bike or car
- July's rapeseed yellow against the blue lake
- Tibetan monasteries and yurts on the lakeshore
- Bird Island in season (closed some years — check before planning around it)
Practical tips
The lake sits at ~3,200 m — headaches and shortness of breath are common on day one; hydrate and skip the first night's alcohol. Sunblock is non-negotiable at this altitude. June and September trade the rapeseed for quieter roads and better prices.
Nearby
Chaka Salt Lake is the standard add-on, 2h south — same trip, different palette. Xining itself, with its mosque quarter and museum, is worth a half day on either end.
