Why go
The city itself is a 20th-century creation that grew around the railway, so treat it as a launchpad. Zhengding, 15 km north, is the payoff: a walled town with four pagodas and Longxing Temple, first built in 586 AD and holding one of the oldest and largest bronze bodhisattvas in China.
Zhaoxian county, 40 km south, holds the Anji (Zhaozhou) Bridge — a single stone arch completed in the Sui dynasty that engineers still bring students to see. Hebei Museum downtown keeps the trip cultural on rainy days.
- Zhengding Ancient City — Longxing Temple's 24-m Song-dynasty bodhisattva
- Zhaozhou Bridge — built around 605 AD, still standing
- Hebei Museum — jade burial suits and Mancheng Han treasures
- Hiking in Cangyan Mountain's cliff temples
Where to go
Spend day one in Zhengding (temples, pagodas, city wall at sunset) and day two at the Zhaozhou Bridge and Hebei Museum. Both are easy taxi or DiDi hops.
What to eat
Zhengding's speciality is the eight-course bowls (bazhen) served to temple pilgrims; Shijiazhuang itself is a meat-and-noodle town — try the local braised noodle soups.
