Why go
Dalian's geography is its gift: the city wraps around the southern tip of the Liaodong peninsula, and the Binhai Road walkway stitches cliff tops, coves and fishing villages together for 30 kilometres. Walk any section — the Jinshitan 'Golden Pebble' geology beach east of town is the classic.
The downtown squares (Xinghai is the vast sea-facing one) host kite-flyers and wedding photos; Russian Street preserves Tsarist-era buildings from the 1898 lease era. Dalian's summer festival calendar runs from beer festivals to beach music, peaking July–August.

Where to go
Day one: Binhai Road section and a beach afternoon. Day two: Xinghai Square and museums (the shell museum is a surprise hit), Russian Street at dusk, seafood dinner.
What to eat
Dalian seafood: salted jellyfish salad, grilled sea urchins, scallops with garlic vermicelli, and the local roast 'sea cucumber with scallion' if the budget allows. Smoked-cold seafood platters come with the local Bingyu beer.
