Why go
Start at Baotu Spring, where the artesian surge is strong enough to visibly boil the pools, then walk the spring belt to Wulongtan and the moat where black-tiled houses still sit over flowing channels. Locals queue with plastic jugs at the public spring taps — the water is genuinely the city's pride.
Daming Lake to the north is the classical Chinese painting made real: willows, lotus and pavilions with the city wall's remnants. Thousand-Buddha Mountain gives the panorama at sunset. Most travellers then use Jinan as the comfortable base for Mount Tai, 20 minutes south by high-speed rail.

Where to go
One relaxed day: Baotu Spring in the morning, the spring quarter lanes at midday, Daming Lake in the afternoon, Thousand-Buddha Hill for sunset. Day two belongs to Mount Tai or Qufu.
What to eat
Jinan food is Lu cuisine territory: sweet-foam millet porridge (tianmo) at breakfast, spring-water tofu, braised carp in sweet-sour sauce and youxuan — spiral fried bread twists.
