Best month to visit

May–Oct

Clear spring and autumn skies show the lake's colour best. Summer brings rain and cloud; winter is cold, and snow can briefly close the pass.

Why go

Yamdrok is not a lake you drive to; it is a lake you drive along. From the Kamba La pass the road drops to the shore, then follows one arm of the lake for many kilometres, the colour shifting with the light. In clear weather the effect is startling — saturated turquoise against bare brown hills, with the snow range beyond.

Tibetans count it among the three great holy lakes, and its shape — a scorpion with its tail curling north — is read into its sacred geography. On the far shore, the Samding Monastery once held the only female reincarnation lineage in Tibetan Buddhism.

  • The Kamba La viewpoint (4,970 m) — the postcard turquoise panorama on the Lhasa–Gyantse road
  • The shore itself: an emerald ribbon of lake between arid golden hills
  • The Karola Glacier, a roadside ice tongue further south toward Gyantse
  • Yaks, herders' tents and a pilgrim's kora route that locals still walk for days

The route

Lhasa to Gyantse via Yamdrok is one of Tibet's classic drives: the Kamba La viewpoint, a stretch of lakeside road, then the Karola Glacier and the fields and fort of Gyantse. Some drivers turn back after the lake; the full loop to Gyantse and back is a long but rewarding day.

Practical tips

The pass is cold and windy at 4,970 metres — a jacket and slow walking matter more than anything. The lakeside stops are simple; take food and water from Lhasa. In monsoon months (July–August) clouds can hide the colour — check the forecast and go early.

Getting there

  • Private vehicle or tour from Lhasa on the S307 toward Gyantse (~2–3h to the pass)
