Best month to visit

Jul–Sep

The crater lake is only visible ~60 days a year — July–September is your best chance. Winter is for skiing and hot springs.

Why go

Heaven Lake is a crater that earned its name: a 2189-metre summit, a caldera rim, and a lake below that flips between blue water and cloud like a stage curtain. The north side runs the classic route — shuttle to the summit, a short walk, and a view that is either there or not.

Below the rim, the mountain gives up its other sights: the Changbai waterfall dropping from the lake's outlet, hot-spring pools where eggs are boiled in the water, and a tundra that blooms briefly in July.

  • Heaven Lake (天池) from the crater rim
  • The Changbai waterfall and steaming hot springs near the trailhead
  • Alpine tundra and birch forest on the climb
  • Wanda Changbaishan ski resort in December–February

Practical tips

The lake is visible maybe one day in three — go early, when the clouds haven't formed, and be ready to wait. The summit is 2,000 m+ with wind; layers are mandatory even in summer. The north and west gates serve different routes; north is the classic, west the quieter.

Nearby

The Wanda resort, 40 min from the west gate, is the region's winter centre with proper ski runs and hotels. Baishan city anchors the south-east approach; the border town of Tumen is a detour for the Yalu River views.

Getting there

  • High-speed rail to Changbaishan station, then a shuttle to the park gate
