Best month to visit

Apr–Oct

Spring and autumn are safest for the plank walk. Summer thunderstorms are dangerous. Winter ice makes the paths treacherous.

Why go

Huashan's five peaks form a natural lotus, and the ridges between them are the attraction: knife-edge spines with chains bolted into the rock. The classic experience is the night ascent from the Jade Spring Temple — start at 22:00, reach the East Peak by 5:00, and watch the sunrise with hundreds of other headlamp-lit pilgrims.

The Plank Walk is technically optional and always terrifying: a 60-centimetre ledge with a harness clipped to a cliff cable, 2,000 metres above the valley.

  • The Plank Walk in the Sky — the cliff-side path with a safety harness (optional!)
  • The Night Ascent — thousands of headlamps climbing to watch sunrise from East Peak
  • The Chess Pavilion and the sheer West Peak ridge
  • Cable cars up from both sides, so hiking is your choice, not your fate

Practical tips

For the plank walk, queue early (before 9:00) or late (after 16:00) to avoid 2-hour waits. Gloves are sold everywhere and help on the chains. Stay overnight in the summit hostels if you want sunset AND sunrise without the night march.

Getting there

From Xi'an, the high-speed train to Huashan North is the cleanest option — an easy day trip, or a two-day trip with a summit night.

Getting there

  • High-speed rail to Huashan North, then a 10-min shuttle to the visitor centre
