Why go
Chaka has been a working salt field for half a century, and the mining left a perfect plane of salt crust flooded with a shallow skin of brine. When the wind drops, the surface becomes a mirror: sky above, sky below, with visitors walking between the two.
The lake rewards patience over fireworks — the famous shots are people standing still in water. Wait for the calm, pick a spot away from the tourist clusters, and give the reflection a moment to settle.

Practical tips
The altitude is ~3,100 m — move slowly and bring sunblock, because the white surface doubles the exposure. Rental boots cover the sharp salt crust; barefoot works in the pools but stings on the flats. Red and white clothing photographs best against the white.

Chaka sits on the classic Xining loop: Qinghai Lake one side, and the grasslands and canyons of the upper Yellow River on the other. Most itineraries do Chaka as a long day from Xining.
